In the era of the electrification of everything, one of the most critical underlying materials is lithium. But, by 2030, Benchmark Mineral Intelligence estimates a 300,000 lithium supply deficit. The lithium battery supply chain serves as the linchpin for growth in clean energy technologies like EVs, energy storage and more, and a shortage could have devastating impacts on these markets.
To increase access to lithium supplies, Lithios’s patented technology unlocks sources of lithium previously considered uneconomical and inaccessible due to difficult contaminant profiles and resource (energy and water) constraints.
Announcing Lithios’s $10 million in seed financing propelled the company into the limelight – just months before the tidal wave of interest in the lithium deposits in the Smackover Formation in the U.S. Within a month, Lithios was featured in 26 articles in top-tier business, finance, technology and trade publications, including TechCrunch and Heatmap News.
Following quickly on the heels of the company’s launch, Lithios held a ribbon cutting and tour of its Pilot and Manufacturing Facility in Massachusetts, with federal, state and local leaders in attendance. Speakers at the press conference included the U.S. Department of Energy ARPA-E Deputy Director for Commercialization Dr. Luis Ortiz, Massachusetts Clean Energy Center CEO Emily Reichert, and Clean Energy Ventures Managing Partner Daniel Goldman. Speaking with the Boston Globe, Lithios detailed its plans to quickly ramp up its manufacturing efforts and unlock untapped sources of lithium in North and South America.
